Please Alison, let me help you. You REALLY need it.
There is an upcoming provincial election here in Alberta. We basically have an election every year because, surprise surprise, no one can ever agree on anything, and also because our Premier's keep quitting on us. So anyway, all the different campaigns have gotten underway, political platforms have been raised, and all that other jazz that goes along with elections is happening. Now, I am someone who very much likes to be informed of all the different platforms and policies that are put forth and I also always vote. It's part of our democratic right, and quite frankly, if you don't vote, then you really don't have a right to complain when you don't agree with something. It's important to know what your candidate stands for on election day. But there is one thing that I also think is important when it comes to elections, and that would be public image. I'm sorry, but if you're running to be Premier of Alberta, do try to channel more Michelle Obama and less Margaret Thatcher. The current Premier, and one who is trying to be re-elected, Alison Redford, has a serious Margaret Thatcher vibe about her. She's fairly young, has a young family, and yet she insists on dressing in dowdy, shapeless, dark coloured frocks and ill fitting pant suits. I do like that she always wears pearls because it's classy, but lets shake things up a bit. You don't need to wear the same necklace every day Alison. In fact, you can shake things up a bit and maybe wear pearl studs instead. I know, I know, it's a big leap and a huge change, but trust me on this one. And while Margaret Thatcher was an interesting woman with some pretty interesting (and by interesting I mean questionable) politics, I'm not sure you want to emulate someone who screwed over Scotland time and time again. Let's be serious. People who don't actually pay attention to the news, and inform themselves on your politics are going to vote for you based on looks. It's basically high school all over again. The beautiful rise to the top, while the ugly strange kids can only bask in their glow. At least Danielle Smith has a hint of style, albeit, one that makes her look like a soccer mom wearing pleated, high-waisted, mom jean-esque khakis. It's just simply tragic. I honestly think these women seriously underestimate the power of looks. Just because you look nice, and modern and fresh doesn't mean that you are compromising on your ideologies. In fact, people are more likely to take you seriously when you look put together. So, because I am a generous, lovely, and I like to think fashionable person, I am going to offer my services to both Alison Redford and Danielle Smith and to make them look pretty and less sad and tragic. I seriously council that you take me up on my offer ladies. I can guarantee that you won't regret it.
Anyway...
Hunger Games mania has swept the world. I can't really claim to know anything about the books because I have just been too busy to actually sit down and devote the time to reading them...also because my recreational reading life was and will soon be again consumed by George R.R. Martin's series, A Song of Ice and Fire. I am saving A Dance With Dragons for Maui in a month. Maybe if I'm feeling particularly ambitious, and if I feel like lugging around about 50lbs of books across the pacific ocean, I'll steal my sisters copies of the Hunger Games and bring them with me. But just because I haven't read the books, or seen the movie, doesn't mean that I don't know anything about the franchise. What I do know is that they put together at completely KICKASS soundtrack! Can it get any better than Arcade Fire, Neko Case, The Civil Wars, Birdy, AND The Decemberists? I honestly think you would be hard pressed to find as good a soundtrack as this one in the past 10 years. And let's not forget that it has Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert and the Pistol Annie's on it, which makes my shameful inner prairie girl pretty ticeled pink. I've probably listened to the soundtrack as a whole at least a dozen times, and this week, I am sharing one of my favourite tracks with you. It's called Nothing to Remember by Neko Case. I highly suggest taking a listen to this soundtrack. I promise you won't regret it.
Happy Muesday!
xoxo
Leah
