Why I Think Mack Major is the Most Horrifying Human Being

Hi friends,

I know it's been a while, and I know that some of you are probably like "hey, it's that Lopsided girl. She's finally posting her random thoughts again. Maybe she'll actually post semi-regularly this time, and not just love us a leave us crying into a tub of Chunky Monkey by Ben & Jerry's". I get it, it's hard, and I'm sorry. That's really all I can say. In the time since I last posted, my life has taken a turn to the fantastic. The asshole kids of the nice neighbours haven't had any more raging parties, and as far as I can tell, haven't touched my shit. I have a loving Boyfriend, who I now live with and couldn't be happier. We have a silly little puppy named Milo, who is the craziest poodle you will ever meet and I have been trying to do that whole "being an adult" thing with varying degrees of success. Most days I wake up and say "please don't make me adult today. I really don't want to adult today", but I somehow manage to pull on my big girl pants and take what the day has for me. Life has been good.
I think one of the reasons why I don't post as regularly any more is because of the things that happen in my daily life, which I can't talk about for various reasons. No, it's not like CIA or CSIS secret, it's just that in my line of work, I need to be as neutral as I possibly can, which means that things and opinions and random thoughts that I would have readily written on in the past are now off limits. Cryptic, I know. That's why I can't really get into it here.

Part of adulting means that I can't just throw my hands up and yell "INTERNET FOREVER" and follow every little rabbit hole I find during my day. But sometimes I do manage to follow the rabbit hole, and then sometimes the rabbit hole finds me, and it just sits there with a giant flashing arrow that says "BLOG GOLDMINE STRAIGHT AHEAD", and when that happens, I really can't help myself. It's like a heady drug that pulls me in until I can't unread the things and I just have to keep going until I can't go anymore. It makes me sad to admit that this actually hasn't happened in quite some time. But then today, the rabbit hole found me, and I followed it, and read the comments and I just...can't even.

So there's this guy named Mack Major, and from what I can tell, he's pretty religious, which is totally fine. To each their own I always say. I first learned of Mack Major from something I found on Facebook. I read the article it linked to and all I can say that it left me scratching my head going "wait, what?!". But I'm getting ahead of myself. This post is on why I think he is the most horrifying individual, aside from the Food Babe, that I have recently encountered. From my internet research I have uncovered that he is a "blogger and writer of great books". I'll be the first to admit, my initial research was all of 5 minutes and I googled him. But, in the whole vastness of the internet, that was all the description I could find. "Blogger and writer of great books". That's a pretty bold statement to make. So I did some more digging, trying to see why his books were so great. Well let me tell you, that is a lot easier said than done. They aren't on Amazon, nor are they on Chapters, or any Christian online bookstore I can find. The guy has written 5 books and not a single one is available from any major bookseller. That should be your first red flag. So I went back to his website and squinted at the teeny tiny logo on the spine of one of his books. It appears his books are self published, so that is a potential answer to that question. It also appears that all the "reviews" of his books are only published on his website. So there's that. Fine, totally fine. These aren't the things that I take issue with. It's the things that he writes about that I take issue with. The article that initially led me down the rabbit hole is called "Seduced by the Serpent: Yoga and the Devil's Door". I'll admit, the title is intriguing, but not in a good way. I read the article and the gist of it is that yoga is bad because it's part of Hinduism, and practicing it is basically the same thing as devil worship and we should all repent or spend eternity in hell surrounded by a lake of fire, blah blah blah. This is an incredibly problematic hypothesis. However, I will say that he does cite several sources on Hinduism and yoga, but whether they are entirely credible remains to be seen (pretty sure he instead of being objective and doing proper research, he chose every single quote to fit his argument, which is horrible). But I digress. His hypothesis is problematic because, first, it turns Hinduism the Hindu into the 'other'. By that I mean that because it is different from western Christianity it is bad, and any God fearing, right wing Christian would be crazy to want to have anything to do with it. As someone who has been engaging in a love affair with Indian history and film I take umbrage to this. The history and culture is rich and vast and has a far flung influence in western culture. Just because Hinduism and the traditional practice of yoga is not what you believe in doesn't make it bad. It just makes it different. The second problem is that he has taken all these quotes literally. I shit you not. Literally. He states towards the end of his article "the true purpose of yoga is to release what the Hindus refer to as the serpent energy that lies at the base of one's spine. This serpent energy once released will enable a person to become a living god." He legit believes that by practicing yoga, you are inviting spirits or demons to enter your body. He even goes as far as to say that practicing yoga is basically the same thing as pagan idol worship. I couldn't make this up if I tried. Personally, I think this is horrifying. Yoga is probably one of the most peaceful, calming exercises I have ever done. After a particularly trying day at work there is nothing I enjoy more than going to a yoga or pilates class and just forgetting about everything and focusing on breathing. Hell, Boyfriend even does yoga and it helps him so much. I read the comments after the article and they actually made me sick to my stomach. People actually believe this crap. One woman said that her doctor told her to do yoga for her chronic pain but she won't do it anymore because apparently it's sinful, at least according to Mack Major. A DOCTOR told her. A medical professional, who went to school for countless years, who knows all about the human body and what's good for it recommended she try yoga, and then along comes Mack Major, with what appears to be ZERO qualifications, who says that yoga is devil worship and she believes him. This woman is ignoring medical advice and that is dangerous.

I'm not trying to rail on  people who have a strong faith or relationship with God. That's not my intention. I will fully admit that I like to think of myself as more of a spiritual person, rather than a religious person. I always say that my education, and my need to know and question everything got in the way of my religion. I have never, and will never have blind faith. Any relationship I have with the big man upstairs is for me and me alone. Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and opinions and can think whatever they want whenever they want. What I have a problem with is misinformation. You can have any opinion you want, but make it an educated one. Back it with actual historical/scientific/sociological/anthropological/some kind of hard fact, not just a few passages from the bible and call it a day. It's like that one time a Christian fundamentalist mom who home schools her kids tried to disprove evolution and said that dinosaurs are actually dragons. I guess in a way she's right, evolution isn't true because people like her still exist. You can have whatever opinion you want, but it has to stand up. If you are publishing books and blogging about all of these things, but can't factually prove any of it, you should be considered dangerous. You're dangerous because there are people in this world who don't know any better and who will actually believe you. People who won't stop and take the time to rationally think about what you say. PEOPLE WHO WILL GO AGAINST COMMON SENSE AND MEDICAL ADVICE. People who will follow you and praise you and just fuel your ego and in turn you will send more nonsense into the world. People shouldn't demonize something of which they have no knowledge or expertise. This is not a good way to prove a point or get your message across. Isn't a central tenant of Christianity the concept of love? What about "Love one another"? Pretty sure that at no point in the bible does it say that yoga is demon worship. Mack Major, you're grasping at straws.

Who knows, maybe I'll lose some friends over this. But then again, if I do, maybe they weren't really friends to begin with. Maybe I'll get a lot of flack over it, but I've never really cared about what people thought of me. Who knows. All I know is that I have a problem with the things that Mack Major is saying on the internet and I feel the need to let people know these things so they can form their own opinions. You can bet your bottom dollar that there will be more nuggets of Mack Major wisdom to come.

So, at the end of the day, I'm going to sit here in my $120.00 yoga leggings, watch DDLJ (because I have mad love for Shah Rukh Khan), and when that's done, go do a nice, long yoga/pilates class. I'll even make sure I throw in a few extra Sun Salutations for good measure.

Namaste bitches.

  1. What irks me is that he has no formal study in theology or Scripture but somehow he feels empowered to spout his teaching as if it were authority. And although I am a psychologically /theologically / philosophically / spiritually degreed male (yeah I spent my adult life in school), I find his views about women and female sexuality sexist and ill-informed! His point of view is narrow and demeaning. If he claims to be a Christian, I hear no love, kindness, or joy (fruits of the Holy Spirit) in his words.

  2. Mack Major (sounds like a pornstar name) is now saying that it is bad for women to masturbate with dildos cause it will "open up a portal and let 'sex demons' in" or some nonsense like that. This guy has got some issues, that's for sure. He seems to have something against women too... Just like the bible... Written FOR men BY men. He needs to do some yoga AND use a dildo on himself. LOL....

    1. So, "Mack Major (sounds like a pornstar name) Judy made my day.

Pretty sure he is overcompensating and has a giant fear or vaginas. He wouldn't know what to do with one if he tried.

People can believe whatever they want, but to be so blatantly misogynistic and misinformed is both terrifying and incredibly sad. I'm constantly shocked that people like his still exist in the 21st century.

  3. He is definitely chauvinistic and sexist! He speaks alot of truth but twists it in a form of attacking, and when you call him out on it, you're a demon or don't have bible knowledge yet he supposed to be a man of God spewing harsh criticism at others when they disagree! He can't accept that he still doesn't have all the answers and that he wasn't granted authority over others just because he has biblical knowledge this was my observation

    1. Hi Linda,

Thanks for the comment. I'm pretty sure all of his ideas stem from the fact that he has a penis. He believes that because he is a man, he has a god given right to spew his nonsense and that he is 100% right and no one can say otherwise. Sounds like he's overcompensating if you ask me....

    1. Hey, I've never once pretended to be a yoga expert. I do, however, consider myself an expert in bullshit, and your google search suggestion is just that. Utter bullshit.

Who actually believes this crap?...oh wait...

  6. You need to repent of your sins and turn to the Lord and GOD Jesus Christ. He loves you and doesn't want you to die in your sins.

  8. My only issue with this guy is I ordered one of his books , never recieved it , and this guy won't reply to my emails , he blocked me on twitter , and may have even blocked me on Facebook. All I want is what I paid for and getting the cold shoulder from him. Not a single word, not even sorry about that, or let me see how I can help you ..nothing.
